As internationalization and cultural diversity increase, the sector faces new challenges and opportunities. The purpose of the module is to strengthen leaders' ability to understand and manage cultural differences, foster inclusive work environments, and exercise leadership based on trust, respect, and equality.
A workshop-based approach combines professional development, reflection, and practical case studies. Some preparatory and follow-up work is expected. Participants gain insight into how cultural norms, communication styles, and expectations influence collaboration and leadership within academic organizations. They learn to identify and address barriers to inclusion, develop strategies for leading diverse teams, and contribute to an organizational culture characterized by fairness and equality.
The content ranges from theory and concepts regarding intercultural competence in higher education leadership—covering topics such as power, structures, and communication—to the management of international staff and practical reflection exercises drawn from the sector. The working methods alternate between academic introductions, group reflections, case-based work, experience sharing, and discussion.

No specific prior knowledge is required, other than familiarity with the sector and basic leadership responsibilities. The aim is to provide participants with concrete tools and strategies for practicing inclusive leadership within an increasingly diverse academic landscape.
Toolkit

As a key part of the project, a dedicated toolkit is being developed for addressing diversity within one's own unit. We are also including links to other resources for working on diversity in our sector.
Module content and learning objectives
We normally meet for half a day to go through the following objectives for the gathering:
- Increase awareness and knowledge of how culture affects communication, leadership, and collaboration.
- Provide the skills to build effective structures and relationships, as well as to support and develop one's own unit through leadership.
- Contribute to a trust-based and inclusive work environment that can enhance the quality of research, teaching, dissemination, and innovation.
